Growing Communities Together: Why the Skilled Trades Matter

Think about the last time your air conditioning quit in the middle of a Georgia summer, or a pipe burst under the kitchen sink, or the lights flickered and went out. In those moments, nobody wonders whether the person showing up has a four-year degree. What matters is that someone skilled, trained, and reliable is ready to fix the problem.
That’s the quiet truth about the skilled trades. They keep our homes safe, our businesses open, and our towns running. And yet, for years, many young people were steered away from these careers without ever learning what they offer. Little Red Acorn exists to change that.
The Backbone of Every Community
Plumbers, electricians, HVAC technicians, builders, and woodworkers do work that touches nearly every part of daily life. Every new school, hospital, restaurant, and neighborhood depends on tradespeople to design, build, and maintain it. When those jobs go unfilled, everyone feels it through longer wait times, higher costs, and delayed projects.
A strong trades workforce means:
- Stronger local economies. Trades businesses are often locally owned, hire locally, and reinvest in the towns they serve.
- Stable, rewarding careers. Skilled trades offer real earning potential and the chance to grow from apprentice to business owner.
- Less student debt. Trade training is often shorter and more affordable than a traditional four-year path, letting students start earning sooner.
- Work that matters. Tradespeople see the results of their efforts every day, from a family’s restored hot water to a new home built from the ground up.
How Little Red Acorn Got Started
Little Red Acorn was founded in 2022 by Chris Greenwood in Georgia and became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit later that same year. Chris saw a need for a resource local schools could use to show students that college isn’t the only path to a successful future. Through hands-on, interactive experiences, Little Red Acorn set out to plant seeds in the minds of young people who might find their calling in plumbing, construction, electrical work, HVAC, woodworking, and more.
The name says it all. Every mighty oak starts as a small acorn, and every skilled tradesperson starts with someone believing in their potential.
Growing the Mission
In 2024, Little Red Acorn expanded its focus to offer scholarships to adults looking to enter or advance their careers in the trades. Whether someone is just starting out or ready to take the next step, these scholarships help cover the cost of training so that financial barriers don’t stand between a motivated person and a solid career.
Alongside scholarships, Little Red Acorn works to educate the community about the importance of the trades and the growing need for skilled workers in the industry.
Bridging Students and Local Businesses
What makes Little Red Acorn different is its focus on connection. The organization draws on an extensive network of industry professionals and local businesses to link classroom learning directly to real career opportunities. Students gain insight into what the work actually looks like, and businesses gain access to the next generation of talent.
Little Red Acorn also supports local businesses directly through professional services designed to reduce costs and improve operations, including:
- Business and systems analysis
- New employee onboarding
- Recruiting consultation
- Training classes
- Customized engagements for specific business needs
- Printing services for merchandise, uniforms, and company swag
This two-sided approach strengthens the whole community. When local businesses thrive, they can hire more people, and when students are prepared for the trades, those businesses have the skilled workers they need to grow.
Supporting Students and Educators
Little Red Acorn believes community involvement is essential to helping students and educators succeed. By building strong relationships with schools, the organization helps introduce modern tools and methods, encourages continuous improvement, and celebrates the achievements of students and teachers alike. Their success is the community’s success.
How You Can Get Involved
Growing the trades takes all of us. Here are a few ways to help plant the next acorn:
- Donate to fund scholarships for students entering the trades.
- Become a corporate supporter and connect your business with the next generation of skilled workers.
- Volunteer your time and expertise.
- Attend an event, like our annual Scholarship Shootout.
- Apply for a scholarship if you’re ready to start or grow your own career in the trades.
As the old proverb goes, “A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they shall never sit.” The investments we make in the trades today will shape the communities our children and grandchildren live in tomorrow.
